It is embedded as part of a complete device often including electrical or electronic hardware and mechanical parts. Because an embedded system typically controls physical operations of the machine that it is embedded within, it often has real-time computing constraints. Embedded systems control many devices in common use.

Founded in 2012, Ferguson Control Systems is an innovative and proven company that specializes in the architecture, design, and implementation of embedded systems software. Located in Houston, Texas, the company is composed of experienced developers of on-board systems from Human Space Flight and Military Programs. The Building Reliable Advances and Innovations in Neurotechnology (BRAIN) Center is an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center that began with Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of Houston (UH). The BRAIN Center will develop safe, effective and affordable personalized neurotechnologies for diagnostics, restoration, enhancement, and rehabilitation of sensory, motor, affective and cognitive functions. This mission will be pursued by supporting innovative interdisciplinary research across the multiple dimensions of brain function and behavior with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life.
